Makersville - where it all began
Hi, I’m Karen and together with my husband David we’ve created Makersville, where we celebrate our love of handmade and the amazing creative talents of Australian artists and makers. Through Makersville we provide our customers with the opportunity to purchase something a little bit special for someone dear or for themselves - handmade treasures to look at, use or wear, and hopefully to enjoy for many years.
The Makersville concept had been brewing for quite some time. I fulfilled my own love of handmade for many years with hobbies such as ceramics, painting, dressmaking and making fused glass jewellery. But only as a hobby – I’d never had the opportunity to make a career of these ventures. But that changed in early 2016 - the opportunity to create Makersville arose. Within a couple of weeks of each other, David and I finished our conventional jobs, and we quickly decided “why not? It’s now or never!” and so Makersville came to be.
We’d been visiting Montville (QLD) for many years, so we knew it well. It is a wonderful artisan township and community in the heart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the perfect location for Makersville’s concept store and gallery. We also have an online shop, enabling us to sell lovely handmade items to those who can’t make it to Montville.
We're a little different from the norm ...
You may have guessed by now, that Makersville is not your ordinary gift shop. It’s not your average gallery. The Makersville retail concept store and gallery is all about supporting and promoting new and emerging Australian creative talent. It’s about nurturing and cultivating the handmade renaissance.
And to achieve these aims, we do things a little differently.
This is how it works:
Our artists and makers may choose their own ‘space’ in the Makersville store, and present their handmade items exactly as they wish, for a small weekly rental. We charge a small commission to cover all the transaction costs. The bulk of the sale goes right back to the artist / maker.
We also have the option of a consignment arrangement for makers and artists who prefer that approach.
Artists and makers also have the opportunity to sell their items in our online shop with no listing costs.
The best part of our concept is that not only do we look after all the marketing and the selling on behalf of our artists and makers,
- there is no longer the need for makers to spend weekends manning market stalls,
- no more loss of revenue through selling wholesale,
- no need to conform to retailers’ purchasing requirements.
You rent your own piece of Makersville and have creative licence within that space, or work directly with us on a consignment basis. How good is that!
If you’re an artist or maker and would like to join Makersville, head over to our Seller information pages, where we’ve laid out everything you need to know in a bit more detail.
For all our other readers, we do hope you like our concept as much as we do. Have a browse through our online store, meet our artists and makers, and if you’re visiting the gorgeous town of Montville, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, do stop in and say hi, and experience first hand our amazing handmade experience.
